What’s the future of legal aid?
Legal aid costs are now up by over a third since 1997 to a massive £2bn a year, and without radical reform the government fears that costs look set to rise still further. According to Lord Carter of Coles who reviewed the system last year, the only way to get costs under control is to stop paying legal aid providers by the hour and, instead, offer a fixed fee for each case. This should force both Lawyers and the voluntary sector to bid competitively for work. However, opponents claim that the service and its clients will ultimately suffer if the idea is set in motion. One thing is for certain, we at Paul Crowley will be watching the debate with interest!
