A Will is a legal document which details how you wish your possessions and property to be distributed after your death.
Having a valid Will is very important and making a Will enables you to:
- Make provisions for your wife, husband or partner
- Appoint Guardians for your children
- Provide for any specific wishes you may have regarding leaving certain items of property possessions or money to someone in particular
- State your funeral arrangement wishes
- Appoint your executors
Challenge a Will
Not having a Will, or having a badly written Will means the government will decide who benefits from your estate and how it will be distributed. This could mean that your family will get less than you intended.
Having a valid Will is also important if you live together but are not married or in a Civil Partnership as the law treats Co-habitees differently. It is a good idea to take legal advice from an experienced Wills & Probate Solicitor such as Paul Crowley & Co Private Client team.

Have you made a Will or updated your existing one recently? Even if you already have a Will, certain circumstances will automatically change it;
- Marriage will automatically revoke an existing Will (unless the Will is made in anticipation of that marriage)
- Following Divorce, a gift in your Will to your ex-spouse and the appointment of your ex-spouse as an Executor, will make that gift or appointment in the Will invalid.
In these circumstances it is wise to consider making a new Will or adding a Codicil, which is a legally formatted addition to the existing Will, replacing part of the original wording.
